Power of the Plants Student Art Display: View more than 40 original entries in the Missouri Botanical Garden’s “Power of Plants” contest, including this year’s winners. Each two- or three-dimensional work of art was created by students in kindergarten through 12th grades and tells the story of an amazing plant “superhero” and its special powers. 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Jordan Education Wing, lower level of the Ridgeway Visitor Center.

Live and Local at Six Flags St. Louis: Every Friday and Saturday night. Are you in a band? Do you want to play at Six Flags St. Louis? Super Kids Save the World Exhibit:. A hands-on traveling exhibit created by The Magic House in partnership with the Crawford Taylor Foundation and Enterprise Rent-A-Car Family that gives kids (and their parents) the power to go green! Designed with “green” materials and practices, this super exhibit gives kids real superhero training starting with the four R's: Reduce, Reuse, Repair, Recycle!

Children’s Village Hospital at The Magic House: The nursery is stocked with everything a pretend parent needs to take care of their new bundle of joy including clothes, blankets, caps, booties, bottles, pacifiers and of course lots and lots of diapers! Future doctors and nurses also play a vital role at the Children’s Village Hospital. Dressed up in scrubs or a lab coat, “hospital staff” perform checkups and make sure the newborns are healthy and well taken care of.

Jurassic Bugs at the Sophia M. Sachs Butterfly House: Thirty-inch dragonflies, foot-long cockroaches and a 10-foot sea scorpion are among the models joining a host of crawling, flying and nesting living creatures on display.

Zip Line Adventure at Meramec Caverns: Soar through the tree tops and across the Meramec River on an hour long adventure of a lifetime. $49.00 for adults and $39.00 for children.

“Faces of the Riverfront” at the Gateway Arch: This special exhibit designed by local artist Sheila Harris and curated by her sister, NiNi Harris consists of nearly 40 watercolor paintings of buildings that once stood on the Gateway Arch grounds.  This exhibit that was especially created for the memorial will be on display in the Historic Old Courthouse.  This exhibit is FREE and open to the public.

"Real Pirates" at the Science Center:  The world's first exhibition of authentic pirate treasure, organized by National Geographic and Arts & Exhibitions International LLC, explores early 18th century piracy and boasts more than 200 artifacts recovered from the first fully authenticated pirate ship ever discoveed in American waters.

Portrait of a Lady Exhibit at the Eugene Field House:  This fascinating exhibition features displays of objects and clothing owned by Eugene Field's beloved wife Julia.  From corsets and crinoline to perfume and lace, come see what it takes to make a lady.

Make Some Noise, Musical Toys Exhibit at the Eugene Field House and St. Louis Toy Museum:  A unique hands on exhibit featuring musical instruments from the Field family collection, a showcase of many toys that inspired generations to the sounds of music and creativity, along with a spotlight on the importance music had on the writings of Eugene's poems and lyrics.

July Events

July 5th – 11th: Titanic the Musical at the Muny. It was a cold midnight at sea, and passengers were dancing in the grand salon until one man at the stern saw disaster looming. Iceberg straight ahead! They called the RMS Titanic unsinkable, and more than 2,000 souls bet their lives on it. They were all coming to America the hopeful ladies, maids from Ireland, the staff of the Cunard Line, and the cream of society. The blockbuster movie told only one Titanic story; the Broadway musical tells many others.

July 6th – 11th: Around the World Journey at Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Resort. Take a journey around the world as we visit Africa, Australia, Mexico, France, Egypt, and Ireland!

July 7th: Whittaker Music Festival at Missouri Botanical Garden. Free evening outdoor concert features Dogtown All-stars, progressive rhythm and blues. Lawn seating; bring chairs or a blanket. Picnicking is permitted after 5 p.m.; pack a picnic or purchase sandwiches and beverages on site. Music begins at 7:30 p.m. Free admission after 5 p.m.; last entry at 9 p.m. The Doris I. Schnuck Children’s Garden remains open with free admission from 5 to 7 p.m. Cohen Amphitheater lawn.

July 8th:  Preserving the Harvest Class at the Missouri Botanical Garden. Deliver the healthful wealth of your garden to your family’s table all year long! Learn the basics and expert tips for canning, drying and freezing all types of fresh produce. 7 to 9 p.m. Kemper Center for Home Gardening. $25. Advance registration required.

July 8th:  Jurassic Dark at the Missouri Botanical Garden. 6 – 10 p.m. Experience the wonder of the Missouri Botanical Garden and the DinoQuest dinosaur exhibition–after hours! Take an evening trek through the Climatron tropical rain forest, where dramatic lighting and fog elements enhance the dinosaurs’ habitat. Discover how dinosaurs—and people!—depend on plants through hands-on activities inside the Brookings Interpretive Center.

July 9th: “The Case of the Dismembered Cricket” at the Sophia M. Sachs Butterfly House.  Youth sleuths can examine a “crime scene” and question suspects to uncover the culprit of a caper. Ages nine through 11 with an adult. 10 to 11:30 a.m. $15 includes one child and one adult. Advance registration required.

July 11th: Bugaloo at the Sophia M. Sach Butterfly House. Dig in the sand for insects and play honeybee games of the summer season. Ages two through four with an adult. Friday from 9:30 to 11 a.m. or Sunday from 12:30 to 2 p.m. $18 per class includes one child and one adult. Advance registration required.

July 11th and 12th: A Conversation with Ben Franklin at The Magic House. 12:00 and 2:00 performances. Benjamin Franklin, one of America’s favorite Founding Fathers, makes a post-Independence Day visit to The Magic House when actor Alan J. Prewitt presents A Conversation with Ben. Alan takes the stage of the Legislative Chamber in the Star-Spangled Center to present an electrifying one-man show about Franklin’s accomplishments as an author, statesman and inventor.

July 12th – 18th:  Damn Yankees at the Muny. This tempting, tantalizing musical that simply sizzles!  It’s the story of Joe, a middle-aged man who still dreams of playing professional baseball.  It doesn’t take long for the dapper devil Appleby and his siren-side-kick, Lola, to convince Joe to sell his soul for the chance to do just that.  This is the musical that’s got it all: Terrific tunes, dazzling dancing, and… baseball!

July 12- 22: Christmas in July at Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Resort. Jellystone Park is a magical place where you can enjoy your favorite holiday during the summer! Create gingerbread houses, have a snowball fight, and more!

July 13 – 16th: Critter Camp at Grants Farm. Have a buffalo or elk eat out of your hands, take a safari ride through the Deer Park and see Grant’s Cabin inside and out, train and care for your own farm animal, groom horses and feed elephants! Critter Camp is an outdoor camp for children between the ages of 5 and 11 years of age.

July 15th:  Presentation on the human brain at the Science Center. 7:00 pm. Recent developments in magnetic resonance imaging allow us to interrogate how different pieces of the human brain "talk" to each other.  Tools that have been used to study networks as big as the internet, and as small as protein interactions, help us understand how brain information flow works in adults, how flow differs from children, and how it may go awry in diseases like Tourette Syndrome.

July 15th: Sounds at the Station at St. Louis Union Station. Carry the Zero performs at 7:00. Admission is free to the public.

July 17th: A Walk in the Park at Six Flags St. Louis. Walkathon Event. Please join us as we walk in hope for the tens of thousands of children afflicted with pediatric cancers.

July 18th: Cook Up a Cricket at the Sophia M. Sachs Butterfly House. Join us for a dining experience like no other! Sample a real cooked cricket or mealworm and learn how insects make up an important part of the diets of people all over the world. 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

July 19th: Home School Days at the Science Center. Home School Days is a program designed to expand opportunities in math, science, and technology curriculum for students (and their families). Activities may differ per grade level. These one-hour sessions provide related follow-up activities for immediately after the session. 1:00 - 2:30 pm.

July 19th & 20th: There are Dinosaurs in the Garden at the Missouri Botanical Garden. Ages 4 – 6. Search for the Garden's summer visitors and look for plants that those ancient herbivores might have eaten. Child-centered, hands-on classes include time outdoors, classroom discussion, a craft project, and a snack. Price includes one child and one adult. $16 for member and $18 for nonmember.

July 19th – 25th: Cats at the Muny. It’s the night of the Jellicle Ball, and cats of every description have gathered in a back alley, slinking around the refuse and cast-offs of the human world. Every cat has his say, and the theatre cat, the Siamese cat, and the bedraggled old Grizabella tell the stories of their lives…and wait. Only one of them will travel on to the Heavyside Layer. Which one will it be? The energy and elegance that has made CATS one of Broadway’s longest-running musicals also make it a purr-fect show for the whole family.

July 19th – 23rd:  Prehistoric Garden at the Missouri Botanical Garden. Ages 9 - 11. Investigate the secrets of prehistoric plants and dinosaurs in the Climatron.  You will learn how scientists have learned so much about extinct animals. Students will complete a week-long, inquiry-based project and share their work with parents on the final day of camp. Two full-time MBG instructors lead this camp. Class Price is $170 member, $185 non-member.

July 20th: Bio-Facts at the Science Center. Learn all about the wide world of animals, and how they live and work together. Explore symbiosis, predation, and speciation while learning about animal behavior and communication.

July 23 – 25th: 500 Series Weekend at Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park Resort. Got a need for speed? Join Yogi Bear for his first race themed weekend!

July 26th – August 1st: The Sound of Music at the Muny. . It has been called “the loveliest musical ever written,” and the hills of Forest Park will come alive this summer, with THE SOUND OF MUSIC! The stern Captain VonTrapp discovers a new love for his children when the irrepressible novice, Maria, brings laughter and music back into their lives. Wit, warmth and gentle humor combine to make this one of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s best-loved musicals.

July 26th – August 1st: Toyfest at Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park Resort. Come see what secret events Yogi Bear has planned for you this week! Toy lovers of all ages are guaranteed to have a great time!

July 27 – 30th: Triassic Trek at the Missouri Botanical Gardens. Ages 6 – 8. Discover a prehistoric tropical paradise in the Climatron! Learn about dinosaurs and ancient plants. Each day camp includes garden walks, songs, stories, crafts, and snack. Two full-time MBG instructors lead this camp. Class price is $84 for members and $96 for nonmembers.

July 27 – 30th: Critter Camp at Grants Farm. July 30th: Monster Movie Night at the Missouri Botanical Gardens. Special outdoor evening viewing of two monster movie cult classics with a dinosaur twist! Movies playing will be, Mothra and Gamera vs. Guiron. Bring chairs or a blanket and enjoy lawn seating. Beverages and light snacks will be available for purchase. Movies will be shown back-to-back starting at 8:30 p.m. Event will be held at the Cohen Amphitheater. Purchase tickets at the door for $10 a person ($5 dollars for garden members).

July 30th: Joy Fest at Six Flags St. Louis. Hear the Christian sounds of one of your favorite Christian artists, Jeremy Camp, who will have everyone jumping to their feet. Show is at 7pm at the Old Glory Amphitheatre - paid concert ticket required.

July 31st: Jurassic Bugs Family Day at the Sophia M. Sachs Butterfly House. “Jurassic Bug Hunt.” Drop-in to explore fields and woods for living examples of ancient critters. Enjoy games and activities inside the Butterfly House, and then go on the hunt to catch and identify living insects. 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
